the klotho conference
Dr. Makoto Kuro-o
Dr. Makoto Kuro-O, M.D., Ph.D., is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on the molecular mechanisms through which endocrine FGFs and Klotho family proteins regulate metabolism and aging. He is best known for discovering the klotho gene, an aging-suppressor that extends lifespan and regulates phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. His lab also studies beta-Klotho, which influences bile acid, fatty acid, and glucose metabolism via the FGF19 hormone subfamily. Current research centers on Klotho’s role in phosphate metabolism and beta-Klotho’s role in energy homeostasis, with the ultimate goal of developing therapies for age-related and metabolic diseases.
